How to Get Rid of Old Appliances in Tucson

Local tips and resources for Tucson residents.

Tucson's Environmental Services Department

The City of Tucson Environmental Services handles residential waste, and they do offer large item pickup for city residents. You can call 520-791-3171 to schedule. However, refrigerant-containing appliances are subject to additional requirements, and pickups outside city limits (Marana, Oro Valley, unincorporated Pima County) aren't covered by the city program.

TEP's Cool Cash Recycling Program

Tucson Electric Power (TEP) runs the "Cool Cash" program that pays customers to recycle old fridges and freezers. Call 855-559-2524 or visit tep.com/recycle to schedule. The units must be working, clean, and between 10-32 cubic feet. TEP's contractor picks them up for free and you get a rebate check in 4-6 weeks.

Arizona ADEQ Requirements

Arizona follows federal EPA Section 608 for refrigerant-containing appliances. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) oversees enforcement. Tucson's proximity to the border means additional environmental oversight in some areas. Our Pima County partners carry full EPA Section 608 certifications.

Sonoran Desert Heat and Your Appliances

Tucson averages 100+ degree days from late May through September. Unlike Phoenix's dry heat, Tucson gets monsoon humidity in July and August, creating a one-two punch of extreme heat plus moisture that's particularly rough on outdoor condensers and garage-stored appliances. Evaporative coolers (swamp coolers), common in older Tucson homes, tend to fail faster here than almost anywhere else. When it's time to replace, we'll get the old one out of your way.
