Appliance recycling: choose the right removal option
The best next step depends on whether the appliance works, how it is connected, and who can accept it locally.
Start with reuse when it is practical
A working appliance may be useful to a buyer, repair business, or donation organization. Tell the recipient its condition and any known faults. Ask about age limits, collection access, and whether pickup is available before making arrangements. Donation and free collection are not automatic.
Check recycling acceptance before loading
Call the recycler with the appliance type and condition. Ask whether they accept the complete unit, whether drop-off or pickup is offered, and whether there is a fee. A scrap-metal price is not the same as a guaranteed payment for an appliance: collection, processing, and special handling can affect the offer.
Cooling appliances need special handling
Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners contain refrigerant. Keep the sealed system intact and ask the provider how it will be handled. EPA’s appliance disposal guidance explains the recovery process and disposal responsibilities.
Compare the full arrangements
Check municipal programs, retailer haul-away with a replacement delivery, and local recycling providers. Compare access requirements, preparation, appointment availability, and total charges. If a provider collects other waste too, clarify which items are included.

Request pickup availability
Submitting an APN request is free. An independent partner may contact you if they can accept the appliance and location. Availability, timing, access requirements, and any charges must be agreed directly. A submitted request does not book an appointment.
