Large appliances need a disposal plan that accounts for both the metal and the components inside.
Check appliance handling before disposal
Illinois EPA’s household waste disposal guidance explains special handling for large appliances, also called white goods. Refrigerants and certain other components require removal through an appropriate process before disposal. The agency identifies scrap recycling as an alternative. Ask the facility what it accepts and how it handles the appliance; do not remove hazardous components yourself.
Find an option for your address
Contact your municipality or contracted waste collector about appliance collection rules. Confirm whether you need a separate appointment and whether a refrigerator follows different rules from a washer or dryer. A regular bulky-item service should not be assumed to accept every appliance.
If a store is delivering a replacement, compare its haul-away terms with a local recycler. For a working appliance, ask a reuse organization about age, condition, and collection access before offering it.

Requesting pickup through APN
You can submit an appliance pickup request at no charge. An independent partner may contact you if they can accept the appliance and location. A request is not a booking, and this state guide does not confirm statewide partner coverage. Agree on timing, access, preparation, and any charges before accepting an offer.
Before arranging removal
- Describe the appliance, whether it works, and any stairs or difficult access.
- Ask whether collection includes carrying the appliance out or requires a prepared collection point.
- For refrigerators, freezers, or air conditioners, confirm that the provider handles refrigerants appropriately. Do not open or cut cooling lines.
- Wait for a confirmed appointment and preparation instructions. Use qualified help for gas, plumbing, or hardwired electrical disconnection.
- Check current fees and acceptance directly with the provider. A public directory is not an endorsement of an APN partner.
