Freezer pickup & removal
Chest and upright freezers need a confirmed collection plan and a destination equipped for refrigerated appliances. Tell the collector about size, condition, and access before preparing the unit.

What to include in your request
- Chest, upright, compact, or built-in freezer, with approximate dimensions.
- Whether it works, contains food or ice, or has a damaged lid or door.
- Its floor, stairs, doorways, and any other obstacles along the removal route.
Coordinate defrosting with a confirmed appointment
Arrange alternative food storage first. After a provider confirms collection, follow the manufacturer’s preparation guidance and agree on emptying, defrosting, and water management. Keep the unit secured away from children, and do not leave it at the curb without a confirmed collection arrangement.
Some utility programs accept qualifying working freezers for retirement. A municipal program or appliance recycler may accept nonworking units. Ask each program about refrigerant handling and any required paperwork before transport.

If no pickup partner is available
Check your municipal waste program, the retailer delivering a replacement, or a local recycler. For a working appliance, contact a local Habitat ReStore about donation acceptance and collection. Confirm the item, appointment, and fees with the provider before making a trip.
Common questions
Can an old chest freezer be picked up for free?
It may qualify if a local partner accepts the unit and access conditions. Tell the partner its size and whether it is empty. Free pickup is not guaranteed by submitting a request.
Can I scrap a freezer that no longer cools?
A freezer can still contain refrigerant after it stops cooling. Ask an appropriate recycler about acceptance; do not cut cooling lines or remove the compressor yourself.
Should I put a freezer outside before anyone responds?
Wait for confirmation and preparation instructions. Keep it secured away from children and agree on a safe collection location with the provider.
