Getting rid of an old fridge starts with two decisions: who can collect it, and who will handle the refrigerant. Compare pickup, retailer haul-away, and local recycling before moving it.

What to include in your request
- Style and approximate dimensions: top-freezer, side-by-side, French-door, built-in, or compact.
- Whether it cools, leaks, has an ice maker, or has damaged doors. Include the model number if accessible.
- Its current floor and the route to the exit, including stairs, narrow doors, and an attached water line.
Plan fridge removal before you empty it
Keep food storage in mind when agreeing on the collection date. Once pickup is confirmed, empty the refrigerator and arrange any defrosting and water-line disconnection the provider requires. Built-in units may need separate removal work; a pickup request does not include cabinet or plumbing work.
A working refrigerator may qualify for a local utility retirement program, but eligibility and incentives vary. Ask your utility about the exact model before promising it to a collector. A nonworking fridge needs a provider that accepts refrigerated appliances.

Check your municipal waste program, the retailer delivering a replacement, or a local recycler. For a working appliance, contact a local Habitat ReStore about donation acceptance and collection. Confirm the item, appointment, and fees with the provider before making a trip.
Common questions
Who will pick up an old refrigerator for free?
An independent collector may offer free pickup if the appliance, travel distance, and access make the job viable. APN accepts requests for local partners; acceptance must be confirmed. Also ask a replacement retailer or your utility about available programs.
Can I put a fridge in regular scrap metal?
Ask the receiving facility first. Refrigerants and other components need appropriate handling. Do not cut refrigerant lines or remove the compressor yourself.
Will APN pay me for my refrigerator?
APN does not promise a cash offer. A free pickup offer is different from buying an appliance. Agree directly with a provider if payment is part of the arrangement.
